Something Startling

Ed and Ian were in the kitchen, most of the lights in their house still off as it was well past 3 AM. Aaliyah and Danny had returned to bed shortly after they had heard that Ed returned home, both of them no doubt tired due to their jobs.             "As I told you twice before, I merely went for a jog," Ed said as he stirred a cup of coffee, put the teaspoon into the sink and took a sip.             "And you didn't drag your bow with?" Ian asked.             "Not as far as I can tell, no. Besides, do you see it on me?"             "I suppose not... Sorry man, it's just that there was another incident with the NDI, as I told you at dinner. It's been bugging me that you are the only other marksman as good as Oracle that I have ever seen."             "Yeah. Believe me. You will be the first to know if ever I am to become a self-proclaimed super hero."             Ian had gone to bed after that, though Ed had de

Something Puzzling

“Where are you off to?” asked the Sergeant as Ian got up from his seat and headed to the door.   “I’ve got to meet a mathematician, he might have a lead for me,”   “Where?”   “Tuks campus, see you later,”   “Shouldn’t I come with?”   “Might as well, I guess, but I’m driving,” said Ian.               Half an hour later they were at Tuks campus. There was no parking on campus, as Ian knew all too well, so he got a parking spot in a shopping centre two blocks away and the two Scorpion officers walked to the campus.             Once there, Ian made his way to the mathematics building while the Sergeant went off to some other faculty building. The hallway to the professors office was decorated with suits of armour at regular intervals, a somewhat out of place theme for a predominantly Afrikaans university.             He could hear muffled voices as he approached the heavy wooden doors. He knocked. No answer. He knocked again and heard the shuffling of feet, then someth

Something Strange

A week had gone by and right after they thought that the whole Others fiasco had ended, Melisa got killed. As much as Devon loathed the girl and JR loved the girl, Ed merely... knew her.             He took a sip of his newly brewed coffee as he stared out the kitchen window at the driveway where Aaliyah was sure to park after work that night. He had had a much easier start to his days recently -- not having to worry about much until now. Though, even as he had a week of peace for a change, he felt wrong somehow. As if something wasn't right. And as if that weren't weird enough already, the pains in his arm seemed to be going away.             During the Others ordeal a few weeks ago, his arm used to hurt like hell on a regular basis. Then it subdued, only being a now-and-then thing. And now, as he stood in the kitchen a day after Melisa had been killed, he knew that he would probably not be needing to worry about his pain at all. But the same time he didn't know that.

Something Begins

“This is going to kill JR,” said Ed.             He, Ian and Dev were in the morgue looking at Melisa’s corps.   “At least we got some info out of her,” said Dev.   “Yeah. But now we need to hire a new graphics designer,” said Ian.   “Who do you think did this, the Others?” asked Ed.   “Who else?” asked Dev.   “No, they wanted her alive. Got a call from them last week after the whole Robert thing, they wanted her for their own justice. This was someone else, not sure if they wanted us to think it was the Others,” said Ian.   “So we wait?” asked Dev.   “We wait,” echoed Ian.     “Are you home again tonight?” Ed asked Ian a few minutes later as they headed to their respective cars.   “Yeah, I think so,”             For the past week, after getting engaged, Ian had been sleeping at Danny’s place. Neither Ian nor Ed knew exactly what they’d do when he got married. Technically it was Ian’s house as his name was on the deed. At the time of purchase, he was the only
